Birth of a Pillow to be screened at Santa Fe Film Festival
well, it got accepted - we're in!
Arunabh (aka Chottu) and Deb in the final title sequence
Im in the final throes of polishing; received the final cut about two weeks ago, but format had to be converted, and a Thanksgiving trip was planned - so we're burning the midnight oil to turn in the finished reel in time for Sunday's screening. Shouldn't be a problem.
Some surprises: run time is now a leaner 47 minutes; the Artist and Priest sequences were re-edited, so Ive done some adjusting there; the Dance Sequence ( the mp3 sample Ive provided) didnt get filmed, due to financial problems (may use some of the music for it for the final credits tho); the doll sequence, while still intense, proved doable - and many thanks to Jefferson for finding the perfect bit of pre-exisiting repertoire to adapt for it, it fits perfectly.
Piyali, Artist sequence ("Will to Power")
Somenath, Priest Sequence ("Holy Book")
Hope to see all of you Sunday at 2:00 pm, at the Film Center; offical details below:
The new film "Birth of a Pillow" by Kolkata filmmaker Sharmy Pandey, featuring a score by New Mexico based Sama' Duo, will have its world premiere as part of the Santa Fe Film Festival.
The film will be presented during the New Mexico Film Expo, running from the 1st through the 5th of December. The Film Expo is a production of the Santa Fe Film Festival, in conjunction with the New Mexico Film Office, and the New Mexico Film Museum.
The Expo is an all-made-in-New Mexico showcase that is affiliated with the SF Film Festival and designed to provide more titles an opportunity to reach audiences.
The film score for "Birth of a Pillow" was created by Santa Fe, New Mexico musicians Mustafa Stefan Dill ( guitars, sarod) and Jefferson Voorhees ( percussion), with special guest Jeremy Bleich ( bass, percussion). Dill went to Kolkata to work with the film unit in August.
The continuous score for this film with no dialogue features a range of textures from ambient to abstract, electronica to heavy metal to simple melodies. The score is unified by the distinctive Indian musical voice and improvisational experience that Dill and percussionist partner Voorhees celebrate as the Sama Duo.
"Birth of a Pillow" will be screened Sunday, Dec 3, 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe Film Center, 1616 St. Michael's Drive in the St. Michael's Village West Mall.

Birth of a Pillow (2006) World Premiere (India, USA)
"Birth of a Pillow" is a film with no dialogue portraying personal responses to sexuality in present-day India. At the juncture of external stimulus, sociocultural conditioning, and personal drive lies the deepest human cores of fear, guilt, loneliness, power, weakness, pain, and denial.
At turns poignant, disturbing, surreal and darkly satirical, "Birth of a Pillow" explores this territory with powerful, vulnerable performances and strong visual imagery.
The film contains stong sexual themes and some nudity.
