last night's gig

Saturday, 25 June 2011 04:48

A lot of good moments, listening in last night's set... and it was lovely to unveil the Gretsch. It's an interesting instrument to tame live :)

The evening was mainly songs and song fragments, new and old and in process, spontaneously derived. Even the purely improvised transitions are quite compositional these days, as opposed to "soloing" excursions, so the ratio of "killer to filler" is very very strong now, too - always a challenge in an improvised setting.

If you haven't heard us in a while, you may be pretty intrigued by the current trajectory. Catch us next time :)

we have a title

Last Updated on Wednesday, 15 June 2011 16:45 Tuesday, 17 May 2011 03:46

We've settled on a title for the new release: "Clear A Path," after one of the lengthier and more varied tracks  on the release. You can preview the piece, split into two parts, on the player at the left.

Occasionally, some pieces inspire a line or two of text (most notably on the "Six Peaces" solo CD). This piece sparked that as well, the only one so far to generate words:

clear a path
with burning light:

 love-forged swath
 to  destroy distractions

aftermath,
niyya* moves ahead

*niyyah , very simplified, deals with  the state and quality of intention held in the heart  as one performs any action. Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak said, "How often a paltry act becomes great by its intention, and how often a great act becomes paltry byits intention." (Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'    8:400)

Graphics and arwork to begin while mastering work is being done in the next couple of weeks. Expected release date will be late July or early August.
